A co-pilot for Biman

If the reports doing the rounds in Bangladesh are any indication, the country's national carrier Biman is in search of an international strategic partner that can bail it out of its crisis. The strategic partner may be offered even equity participation, it is learnt.

Cash-strapped Biman suffered a loss of Taka 1,000 crore in 2005-06 alone, the accumulated loss being much more. It owes more than the equivalent of Rs 1,000 crore to Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation on unpaid fuel bills.

Rising fuel cost, ageing aircraft, surplus manpower and non-profitable routes are believed to have led to the present situation.

The airline has suspended services on several international routes and is mulling similar steps on certain domestic services too. Meanwhile, a manpower assessment study is being undertaken with assistance from the World Bank.
