A Lanka take-off

Air Asia CEO, Mr Tony Fernandes

Air Asia Bhd, Malaysia's second national and South Asia's successful low-cost carrier, has spread its wing to Sri Lanka. Holiday Air, Sri Lanka's first budget airline, has been re-launched as Air Asia Lanka after sealing a deal with Air Asia.

Air Asia Lanka remains a 100 per cent Sri Lankan firm though the possibility of the Malaysian company acquiring stake in it in future is not ruled out. Air Asia will train the pilots for Air Asia Sri Lanka and also provide the technological assistance in regard to booking of tickets through the Internet.

Launched in December 2001 with two-aircraft Air Asia Bhd has defied sceptics to become a significant player and has been imitated by startled national carriers along with a host of new low-cost carriers. Thus, there are Thai Air Asia in Thailand and PT AW Air International, the Indonesia arm of Air Asia.
