IISc student bags KC Mahindra award

Mumbai , Sept. 24

Mr Shamit Srivastav from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, has bagged the top prize (second prize) for the KC Mahindra Award for Excellence in Automotive Design 2006.

There was no winner for the coveted first price as the jury (Mr SM Sarawate, Vice-President, R&D- farm equipment sector, Mahindra & Mahindra and Dr Vijay Bapat, Head of Department, Industrial Design Center, Indian Institute of Technology, Powai) felt the entries did not meet the desired expectations to qualify for the numero uno award. Mr Shrivastav won a cash award of Rs 50,000.

The IISc student broke the tradition of the National Institute of Design (NID) being awarded the top honours earlier. However, the institute (comprising a four-member team) was awarded the third prize out of the 100 entries that took part in the design competition. The team won a cash award of Rs 25,000.

Of the 100 entries from top institutes like NID, Ahmedabad, Indian Institute of Technology, Rourkee, IISc, Bangalore and others, 10-15 entries were short listed for the awards. There were five criterias that governed the competition - originality of the design, practical ability of the concept, packaging, aesthetics and quality & content of the sketches.

It's the fourth year of the award's presence in the country. This year's theme was dedicated to the innovations in the rural transport. Various themes have been a part of the award ever since its establishment. In its first year, 2003, the theme revolved around styling, 2004 was dedicated to safety, while 2005 was all about ergonomics.
