Promote no-frills accounts, says Banking Ombudsman

Our Bureau

Mangalore , Sept. 25

The Banking Ombudsman (Karnataka) has urged the bankers in Dakshina Kannada district to popularise `no-frills' accounts to provide banking facilities to more people.

Addressing the bankers of Dakshina Kannada district at Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry here on Monday, Mr K.R. Ananda, Banking Ombudsman (Karnataka), said that only 37 per cent of the people in the country have got the benefit of banking facilities. The remaining people are yet to be covered by banks.

In such a situation, `no-frills' account will help improve financial inclusion. Bankers should encourage `no-frills' accounts to increase the coverage of banking facilities in un-banked areas.

Stating that the new Banking Ombudsman Scheme came into effect from January this year, Mr Ananda said he has received nearly 2,000 complaints in the past nine months. Of them, more than 50 per cent of the complaints were regarding credit cards, debit cards and ATMs. Bankers should look into these aspects seriously and attend to the problems immediately, he said.

To a query, he said the pension-paying authority should calculate the pension amount and finalise it.

Banks should be a channel to disburse the amount. Banks should not be held responsible for any deficiency in calculating the pension amount.

Pension Calculations

"It is the primary duty of the pension-paying authority to calculate the amount and finalise it," he said.

Mr K.U. Shanbhag, Deputy General Manager of Syndicate Bank, welcomed the gathering. Dr Eswaran, Assistant General Manager, State Bank of India, was present on the occasion.
