Shipping Gateway Distriparks to set up CFS at Kochi port Our Bureau
Mumbai , Sept. 26 Gateway Distriparks Ltd (GDL), a port-based logistics facilitator, plans to set up a greenfield container freight station (CFS) at Kochi port. The company has tied up with the Chakiat group, which is engaged in shipping and related activities, to set up the CFS near Vallarpadam. The two companies have formed a 60:40 joint venture, with GDL holding the majority stake. According to a company press release, the total cost of the project is estimated at Rs 25 crore. The Kochi CFS, which will be developed in phases, will have a capacity to handle 15,000 TEUs per annum. Capt C.S. Verma, GDL's CEO, feels that factors such as growth in exim cargo and the concomitant congestion at major ports could see traffic getting diverted to smaller ports. "Kochi has the potential to develop as a major trans-shipment hub and we are gearing up to meet this demand," he said. The company recently inaugurated a sixth warehouse at their CFS at Dronagiri, about 9 km from JNPT, with a capacity to handle 600 TEUs per month.
