Subash Chandra and brother join UNI board

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Sept 26

The Chairman of Essel Group, Mr Subash Chandra, and his brother Mr Jawahar Goel were on Tuesday co-opted as directors of the United News of India (UNI).

Mr P.C Lahiri, who is Senior Vice-President Corporate Affairs at Essel Group, and Mr C.S. Vishwanathan, Executive Assistant to Mr Chandra, have also been co-opted to the UNI board.

A statement issued by the Chairman of the Board of Directors, Mr Manoj Kumar Sonthalia, after the annual general meeting (AGM), states that the board resolved to offer on a rights basis and at a premium the balance un-issued shares of the company to all shareholders, by giving 21-day notice.

In an effort to put at rest fears that the board-level changes could lead to job losses, the statement adds that the basic character of the agency would remain unchanged. "The activities of the company which today comprise Hindi, English and Urdu news services and photographic services would be expanded to give it a global footprint by utilising existing resources, including the manpower. The intention of the founding fathers to have a viable news agency offering independent news subscribers would be reinforced," the statement adds.

Meanwhile, the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of UNI has rejected the move to induct Mr Chandra and others on its board.
