Trinamul Congress protests; calls for 24-hour bandh

Kolkata , Sept. 26

Even as the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamul Congress continues with its agitation against acquisition of agricultural land at Singur for the Tatas' small car project, the West Bengal Government has said that the land will be handed over to the Tatas after the Puja festival.

Dr Sabyasachi Sen, West Bengal's Principal Secretary in-charge-of Commerce & Industries, said that since the land had been acquired in the name of the West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation, mutation and conversion of the acquired land would have to be done first before it could be handed over to the Tatas.

Bangla Bandh

On September 26, some landowners who handed over their land to the State Government received their compensation cheques. Meanwhile, the State Government sources said the situation in Singur and nearby areas was "tense but under control."

On September 25 night, the police and rapid action force personnel were called in following which Ms Banerjee and some of her party colleagues were arrested.
