Orthodox leaf prices higher at Coimbatore auctions

Our Bureau

Coimbatore , Sept 27

The total offerings at the Coimbatore tea auction rose marginally from 4.31 lakh kg during the previous week's sale to 4.72 lakh kg last week. Leaf grades accounted for 1.95 lakh kg and the rest constituted dust.

Orthodox grade: The Nilgiris orthodox leaf continued to fetch a good price, while the high-growns witnessed a lower trend with some withdrawals. Medium variety was irregular on quality. CIS exporters offered good support to the well-made teas, while the major blenders were active on the high grown larger teas and medium brokens. Internal demand was limited to the whole leaf and fannings.

There was fair demand for the orthodox dust. Limited volumes were sold at irregular rates. Fibrous residuals suffered withdrawals. Exporters and few internal buyers lent support.

CTC grade

The demand for the CTC leaf was fair at irregular rates. Upcountry buyers were active on the good liquoring varieties while exporters showed interest in medium/plainer bolder grades. Pakistan type of teas quoted easier by Re 1 to Rs 2. The exporters continued to operate on clean black smaller brokens and fannings albeit selectively at lower levels.

Good liquoring CTC dust sorts were irregular with quality. Plainer varieties occasionally quoted at dearer levels. While HLL remained silent, AVT and Indco operated on good liquoring teas.

The orthodox medium high growns ruled between Rs 65 and Rs 86 a kg, while the best CTC dust touched a high of Rs 67 per kg.
