Visakhapatnam , Sept. 27 Dr Reddy's Laboratories' first finished dosages plant here was inaugurated on Wednesday in the Visakhapatnam special economic zone (VSEZ) by Mr Satish Reddy, Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer. He said on the occasion that the plant would produce cytotoxic and anti-harmonal drugs for curing cancer, mainly for export to the development markets of the US and the EU. "Though we are late starters in oncological products, we are the leaders in the domestic market and we have till now been exporting to the developing markets. This plant will give us a competitive edge in the advanced markets," he said. He said it had the capacity of producing 40 million cytotoxic capsules, 40 million anti-harmonal formulations and seven million injectibles per annum. It had been set up at a cost of Rs 40 crore and capacity expansion could be taken up in the next two years or so at an additional cost of Rs 15 crore. Mr Satish Reddy said the company had a big bulk drug manufacturing unit at Pydi Bhimavaram in Srikakulam district and therefore there were no plans to set up a unit in the proposed pharma city in Visakhapatnam district. He said the Vizag unit was benchmarked to the highest global regulatory standards and it would produce drugs conforming to the most stringent standards. He said it was the seventh finished dosage unit of the company and the earlier one had been set up at Baddi in Himachal Pradesh in March. Mr Aswani Kumar Malhotra, Executive Vice-President, formulations and technical operations, said the unit was equipped with modern infrastructure and isolation technology would be used to handle potent compounds.
