Indian visitors to Malaysia in the MICE (meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions) segment increased 28 per cent in 2005 over the previous year, according to Mr Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Mansor, Minister of Tourism, Malaysia.
He told newspersons here on Wednesday that Indian arrivals for conferences in 2005 stood at 23,302 as compared to 18,081 in 2004.
To further drive this growth, the Malaysian Government now offers Indian tourists 30-day visas on arrival, Mr Mansor said, adding that Indians can avail this facility from six different entry points to the country on payment of RM 100 (Rs 1,300).
Trade relations between India and the ASEAN region currently stand at about $23.1 billion, he said. Malaysia seeks to forge ties with India in the hospitality and tourism sectors in particular, he said, adding that several Malaysian companies were looking at investing and initiating joint ventures to develop hotels, resorts and entertainment centres in India.
The Tourism Ministry would soon launch a campaign in India to encourage Indian private investment in Malaysian real estate and property.
The Ministry of Tourism, Malaysia, expects Indian arrivals to touch 4 lakh this year, as compared to 2.2 lakh in 2005.
