Letters Multiplex effect
This is with reference to "The multiplex multiplier effect" (Business Line September 27): The author says that farmers will get better prices and terms it a "boon for farmers." The facts are otherwise. According to a study "of every £1 of retail price for Ecuadorian bananas, the plantation worker receives just 1.5 pence, whereas the plantation owners receive 10 pence, the trading company 31 pence and ripener/distributor 17 pence and the final retailer 40 pence. The banana story is just one part of what has been described as a disaster for small farmers. With all these drawbacks, the supermarket syndrome is an inevitable result of the liberalised economy and little can be done to stop this mighty wave. The rate at which the malls and multiplexes are growing in India, it is a win-win situation for the builders and developers. It is too early to conclude whether the multiplexes are yielding adequate sales and profits, especially for the individual shops. How our growers and workers are being exploited needs to be studied. It is surprising that multiplexes should be termed `modern temples of India.' S Subramanyan Mumbai
