DD turns to movies to boost revenue

Our Bureau

New Delhi, Sept. 28

Having lost the rights to broadcast live cricket matches, Doordarshan is to look at maximising its revenues by showing blockbuster movies during the remaining part of the year. The state-owned broadcaster has set up a three-member committee headed by the Chief Executive Officer, Mr Brijeshwar Singh, to implement the new policy.

At present, Doordarshan has five film slots, including the Friday and Saturday night feature films and retrospective of Sunday afternoons, among others. The films will be marketed by Prasar Bharati's Marketing Divisions in Mumbai and Delhi. The films will be largely procured through National Films Development Corporation, Mumbai, as far as possible.

Doordarshan has scheduled several blockbuster movies including Munnabahi MBBS this Friday and Jism the following day. Besides, to mark Gandhi Jayanti, DD will also be showing Gandhi Se Mahatma Tak between October 2 and 4.
