A business delegation from the Flanders region of Belgium would visit India in March 2007, according to Mr Jayanth Nadiger, Trade Commissioner of Flanders, Belgium.
Addressing an interactive meeting organised by the Southern India Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SICCI), he said that the delegation would comprise representatives from segments such as petro-chemicals, logistics, food processing, services, IT and bio-technology.
He said that traditionally the diamond segment, which constitutes about 60 to 70 per cent of the two-way trade, has dominated trade between the two countries.
However, the non-diamonds segment of trade between India and Belgium is growing at 45 per cent per annum. In the area of logistics, technology transfer would be the key, he said.
The region of Flanders has four ports, including the Antwerp port, which is rated as one of the top five ports in the world, with a container turnaround time of 52 seconds. He said Belgian expertise in this field could come in handy for India. In this endeavour, the Belgian Ministry has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Shipping Ministry to work jointly in the area of logistics, he said.
