Combating corruption

This refers to ``A multilateral initiative to combat corruption'' (Business Line, October 3). There has been an increase in corruption in the last six decades since Independence.

Corrupt practices are increasing the debt burden of individual citizens. Often, the machinery to reduce corruption at the spot where it takes place seems to have failed due to large-scale negligence and indifference on the part of the citizens. Corruption has become more or less institutionalised and legitimised in many parts of the country.

Only a part of has been unearthed, thanks to the timely interaction between the public and the investigating agencies. Usually, the investigating team is hamstrung by those with vested interests.

Reduction in corrupt practices would invariably benefit the citizens.
