AP bids to meet power demand in rabi season

Projections pegged at 180-190 MUs a day

Distribution companies have been advised to ensure that farmers get 7-hour supply during the rabi season.

Hyderabad , Oct. 5

The Andhra Pradesh Government is gearing to meet the enhanced power demand for the coming rabi season, which could potentially extend up to April 2007.

The demand projections are being pegged at 180-190 million units a day, which would be a record figure for the State.

The Government is training all efforts on educating farmers on opting for irrigated dry crops. The increased demand is despite the fact that the State has witnessed a good monsoon this year.

According to a statement from the Chief Minister's Office, the distribution companies have been advised to ensure that farmers get seven-hour supply during the rabi season.

The Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, has advised the distribution companies to seek the State Electricity Regulatory Commission's permission to increase investment for high voltage distribution system (HVDS).

Even though the distribution companies had filed for an investment of Rs 1,250 crore, to cover 4.39 lakh pumpsets, the regulator had approved only Rs 577 crore for the scheme.

At a review meeting on the HVDS system, Dr Reddy suggested that the HVDS system project be expedited as it was ideally suited to meet the scattered low-density loads observed in rural parts of the State.

This system also ensures that there is saving of about 10 per cent from reduction in system losses. The HVDS system, which improves farm pumpset efficiency, has been implemented to serve about 1.83 lakh agricultural pumpsets at an investment of about Rs 500 crore, to which Rs 112 crore has been added to bring 32,729 connections under its purview.

Since gas supplies have come down, the drop in power generation from gas-based plants has aggravated the State's power situation.

To better manage the agricultural requirements, Dr Reddy has advised the distribution companies to make arrangements for additional power purchases during the coming months.
