Exim division to scout for international market

The State Government is likely to levy cess on ostentatious marriage functions.

Thiruvananthapuram , Oct. 5

The Kerala State Small Industries Development Corporation (SIDCO) will expand its activities to information technology and telecommunication sectors.

The Industries Minister, Mr Elamaram Kareem, said in the State Assembly on Thursday that the corporation would also form an export-import division to scout for international market for the goods manufactured by the small-scale industries in the State. Besides, it is planning to establish a quality control cell and strengthen the raw materials division.

STIPULATION

The Minister said that SIDCO had set up eight industrial parks under the scheme of one such park in every Assembly constituency. While title deeds will be issued to the industrialists who have taken land in the parks, it will be stipulated that the land should be used only for industrial purposes and that the clearance of the District Industries Centres should be obtained.

Mr Kareem informed the House that the public sector monitoring committees would submit their review reports to the Public Sector Restructuring and Internal Audit Board before November 10 and the board would submit the final review report to the Government before November 14.

CESS ON LAVISH WEDDINGS

The Minister for Health and Social Welfare, Ms P.K. Sreemathi, said the Government was considering a proposal to introduce a legislation to levy cess from those conducting ostentatious marriage functions in the State.

She said that while framing the legislation, which would also seek to limit the number of invitees for such functions, the Government would look at the possibility of utilising the cess thus collected to conduct marriages of destitute women.

The Finance Minister, Dr Thomas Isaac, said that a proposal to extend luxury tax to cover such marriages could be incorporated in the Finance Bill.

Ms Sreemathi told the House that as many as 1,426 destitute children were adopted by individuals during the past five years. Of them, 121 children were adopted by non-resident Indians.

A proposal to set up a medical university in the State was under the consideration of the Government, she said.
