Kolkata , Oct. 5 For the first time in its history, SAIL's Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) has crossed one million tonnes of hot metal production in the first half of the year. According to a press release issued by RSP, sinter production during April-September 2006 was 1.46 million tonnes. Hot metal production was at 1.04 million tonnes, crude steel at 0.98 million tonnes and saleable steel at 0.92 million tonnes. As compared to the corresponding period previous year, the plant recorded a growth of 34 per cent in sinter, 43 per cent in hot metal and 40 per cent in saleable steel. "It is noteworthy that RSP has crossed the one million tonne mark of hot metal production after having crossed the 0.5 million tonne mark in the first quarter. "With this, the plant is poised to surpass the rated capacity of two million tonne for the first time", the release stated. The plant management stated that it started the financial year with the aim to maximise volume, increase capacity utilisation, reduce cost of production and enhance efficiency and profitability. "In tune with this, it can be mentioned that more than 100 per cent capacity utilisation was achieved for each month during the first half without exception in all the major units", the release added.
