Non-conventional Energy Govt mulls blending biogas with natural gas Our Bureau
Powering progress 19 billion units of electricity generated from renewable energy sources supplied last year. Total installed capacity of power from renewable energy sources has crossed 8,500 MW.
New Delhi , Oct. 5 The Centre is exploring the feasibility of blending biogas with liquefied natural gas and compressed natural gas supplies in order to increase the share of alternate fuel in the total energy mix. The Ministry of Non Conventional Energy Sources (MNES) has asked the private sector engaged in production of biogas to consider feeding biogas into the natural gas pipelines for the city gas projects being planned in different cities of the country. "Biogas can be purified and compressed to meet the requirements of the city gas projects and thus throw open a good opportunity for development and growth of biogas plants in the country," MNES Secretary, Mr V. Subramanian, said here on Thursday.Speaking at the MNES-sponsored national workshop on `Policy Framework for Biogas Programme for next 10 years' at IIT Delhi, Mr Subramanian said the success of this initiative could lead to alternative use of biogas, which at present is being used either as a cooking fuel or being considered for supply to consumers through cylinders.
Ecology gains
He also said the renewable energy sector was not only supplying electricity produced from renewable and non-conventional sources but also helping in saving ecology by replacing firewood and fossil fuels. He said 19 billion units of electricity generated from renewable energy sources had been supplied during last year and that the total installed capacity of power from renewable energy sources had crossed 8,500 MW.
