Visakhapatnam , Oct. 6

The Andhra Pradesh Government is proposing establishment of a shipyard at Kakinada and is ready to allocate 600 acres required for the purpose, according to the State Roads & Buildings Minister, Mr J. Ramamohana Rao.

Mr Rao, who was here on Thursday evening to lay the foundation stone for a rail overbridge at Lankalapalem, said the State Government was keen on developing the Kakinada-Visakhapatanm belt as an industrial corridor and several projects were coming up in the near future in Vizag.

At Kakinada, a port-based special economic zone (SEZ) with a refinery was being set up by ONGC. The Minister said the State Government was negotiating with the L&T for setting up the shipyard, estimated to cost roughly Rs 1,000 crore. He said the details were being worked out and the Chief Minister would have to finally clear the proposal.

The Minister did not specify whether the proposed shipyard would form part of the special economic zone or land would be allotted for it separately.

Besides Mr Rao, the Minister of State for Defence, Mr M.M. Pallam Raju, also participated in the function at Lankalepalem. Mr Pallam Raju said there was a proposal to set up an international airport between Kakinada and Vizag in view of the growing importance of the region.

A central team would soon inspect some of the sites for the purpose, he added.
