India Corrupt No.1

Transparency International's Bribe Payer's Index 2006 brands India the most corrupt nation in the world. India now becomes the most corrupt exporting nation in the world too.

This ranking is a matter of serious concern at a time when Indian business is aggressively scouting to buy out foreign companies. India has been repeatedly branded as one of the most corrupt countries. The ranking has not improved with time. This only suggests that we have few institutional checks and balances to ensure that business, whether at home or abroad, is conducted in an ethical manner. Files take forever to move, civil servants seem beyond accountability and the judicial system is dogged with delays. Several international companies are reported to have complained that it is difficult to do business in India, as palms have to be greased at every level to get things moving. Corruption is not only confined to politicians or the government machinery alone but to the society at all levels. An honest Indian has become a matter of exception rather than the rule.

Issues of governance and accountability have to be enforced at all levels to eliminate corruption and ensure rapid growth of our economy. The laws have to be implemented more strictly.

Our leaders should realise dangers of corruption and take effective action .

S. Narayan, Mumbai
