Oil Palm India plans expansion

Our Correspondent

Kottayam , Oct. 8

Oil Palm India Ltd (OPIL) will embark on a massive programme to extend oil palm cultivation in Kerala.

The climate prevailing in the State is congenial for the growth and development of the crop where one lakh hectares has been identified for cultivation, said Mr V.B. Binu, Chairman, OPIL. The Government has accorded sanction for the expansion programme. In Malabar area consisting of Malappuram, Wayanad and Kozhikode, 1,000 acres are now available for cultivation where about 180 small growers would be given subsidy of Rs 24.2 lakh to undertake immediate planting in 200 acres.

The subsidy is now given at the rate of Rs 23,000 per hectare and Rs 73,000 per hectare for kari lands. The gestation period is four years and harvesting can be done continuously for 35 years. For want of proper awareness farmers do not show enthusiasm to take up cultivation.

But in Malabar area they have shown much interest now especially following the failure of certain crops such as arecanut there.
