New Delhi , Oct. 8

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation has awarded Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL), the new joint venture company that is undertaking the modernisation and restructuring of Delhi airport, an aerodrome licence.

The licence authorises DIAL to operate the airport. The joint venture company that has already submitted the master plan for development of the airport to the Government hopes to complete the first phase of the project by March 2010, well before Delhi hosts the Commonwealth Games.

In the first phase, the airport is to have an integrated domestic and international passenger terminal and would be able to handle upwards of 35 million passengers annually.

After the completion of the first phase the airport would also be able to accommodate the world's largest aircraft, the Airbus A-380.

The GMR group holds a majority stake in DIAL. The other partners of the joint venture include Fraport, the operators of Frankfurt airport, and the Airports Authority of India, with a minority stake.
