Opinion - Letters
Clemency petition

This is with reference to "President sets an ominous precedent" (Business Line, October 10): Afzal Guru's case is proving to be an acid test in the campaign to abolish capital punishment.

Granting clemency is the prerogative of the President; he will have to take a conscientious decision.

The President should be allowed to make a decision on his own, without pressure from anyone.

Tharcius S. Fernando Chennai

The President's decision to meet with Afzal Guru's family has raised eyebrows. There have been many offers to provide defence counsel for Afzal. Who denied him the right to have one in the first place?
