Infrastructure States - Andhra Pradesh Brandix gets land in Vizag Our Bureau
Visakhapatnam , Oct. 11 The Andhra Pradesh Government has declared its intention to make Visakhapatnam a major garment export centre and allotted one thousand acres to Brandix India for setting up a textile park near Atchyuthapuram and it has also allotted plots to the small entrepreneurs to set up export units in the apparel park in the vicinity of Vadlapudi village. These projects have been taken up with the avowed intention of providing training and employment to rural women in Visakhapatnam and the neighbouring districts on a large scale. However, teething problems seem to be dogging the units as the training imparted by the District Rural Development Agency does not seem to be adequate. The understanding was that the DRDA would impart training to the rural women in garment manufacture and the units would provide them employment. Eight to nine units have been allotted plots at Vadlapudi village so far. In the first phase, the DRDA and the Greater Visakha Municipal Corporation (GVMC) imparted training to 3,000 women in garment manufacture and fashion technology, spending Rs 2,600 on each of them. The GVMC provided the required funds and the DRDA undertook the training programme in different centres including the one at Vadlapudi. However, according to some of the entrepreneurs, the training was not adequate and the skill levels of the women are not sufficient to take up production on a full scale. Ms Sailaja, Managing Director, Saitheertha Apparels and Exports, says that the company has been allotted two plots at the Vadlapudi apparel park and is going ahead with the works to set up the unit at a cost of Rs 4 crore. "However, we are facing a grave problem. The women have not been given industrial grade training and we are retraining them at the Vadlapudi centre again. The DRDA has also not given us the amount of Rs 2,600 required for training the women," she complained.
