Science & Technology NRDC awards for unique inventions Our Bureau
New Delhi , Oct. 11 The National Research Development Corporation (NRDC) on Friday awarded five teams for their unique inventions in the fields of agriculture, engineering and medical sciences. The awards are given on behalf of the Department of Science and Industrial Research (DSIR), Ministry of Science and Technology. The first invention, to be felicitated by a cash prize of Rs 2 lakh, was the development of a continuous film contractor to be used in the processes for treating various hydrocarbon stream with caustic or amines to remove unwanted components such as mercaptans and napthenic acids. The second invention, awarded Rs 1 lakh, was a full garlic peeling machine for purposes of high productivity in the pickle industry. The third invention, which also got Rs 1 lakh, was the development of the Vivek thresher for finger and barnyard millet to effectively overcome the drudgery of traditional threshing. The fourth award of Rs 60,000 went for the development of a membrane oxygenator, a medical device for cardiac surgery. The fifth invention fetched Rs 40,000 was for the development of a guard for protecting the padlock and strip. Dr Mangala Rai, Director-General of Indian Council of Agriculture Research and Secretary, presented the awards.
