Ahmedabad , Oct. 12

With a view to arming them with a soft-landing device in civil life after retirement from the armed forces, the Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad (IIMA) on Thursday launched a unique "Certificate Course in Business Administration" for the soon-to-be retiring officers of the three Services.

Major-General Harwant Singh, Director-General - Resettlement (DGR), Ministry of Defence, and IIMA Director, Dr Bakul Dholakia, formally inaugurated the programme, which has been specially designed by IIMA at the instance of the DGR.

The programme aims at providing management education to the officers of the Indian armed forces, whether in short-service commission or regular commission, who are due to retire shortly or have retired recently, IIMA sources said.

Altogether 60 officers drawn from the three Services and selected by the DGR from amongst the eligible officers, joined the first batch on Thursday. They will stay on the IIMA campus till March 17 next year when the six-month-long, full-time, residential course concludes.

The objective of the programme is to help such officers from all the three Services - Army, Air Force and Navy - in their rehabilitation in civil life after their retirement.

Training

Management training has been identified as the key area based on their preferences. A number of retired officers have been joining the corporate and private sectors in various capacities.

The programme will be broadly divided into three terms.

In the first two terms, the participants will be offered about 17 core courses in various functional areas such as economics, marketing, finance, accounting, organisational behaviour, and costing.
