West Bengal has decided to commission a State-wide land survey to preparing a roadmap for land usage for the next 25 years. This was announced here today by Mr Abdur Razzak Mollah, West Bengal's Minister for Land and Land Reforms. Mr Mollah's announcement followed a meeting of the State's Land Use Board.
Mr Mollah told presspersons at the State administrative headquarters of Writers' Buildings here that, as per the last recorded data, West Bengal has 3.97 crore plots of land of different sizes. These include agricultural land, ponds, water bodies and land that was being used for industrial purposes, among others. It has been estimated that around 2 per cent of agricultural land was being converted to non-agricultural purposes every year.
To begin with, satellite mapping of all land in the State would be done. This would be backed up with a physical survey.
Mr Mollah said the process of land acquisition at Singur in Hooghly district for the Tatas' small car project has been completed. Next, the Government will acquire 3,000 acres for building a road from Barasat in North 24 Parganas to Raichak in South 24 Parganas.
