The 13th National Congress on Corrosion Control began here on Thursday with a call to prepare a `corrosion map of India' and to take up corrosion audit in major structures in the country.
Inaugurating the three-day Congress, Prof K.I. Vasu, Founder Patron of the National Corrosion Council of India (NCCI), said the Government could earmark a considerable amount to prepare the corrosion map. The country does not have data on the corrosive aspects in various areas. Data on corrosion will help in understanding the period of maintenance of major structures. The preparation of the `corrosion map' has to be an all-India effort with field stations throughout the country in all major cities and industrial areas, according to Prof Vasu.
The Government could set apart Rs 150 crore to Rs 200 crore to make the map, he said.
Prof Vasu also stressed the need for legislation on taking up corrosion audit in major structures in the country.
The boom in the building industry has necessitated such legislation.
Mr P. Tamilvanan, Chairman of New Mangalore Port Trust, presided over the meeting.
