Railways States - West Bengal SER to speed up 87 trains from Dec 1 Our Bureau
Kolkata Oct. 13 , As part of a continuing exercise to increase the speed of existing mail/express trains, the South-Eastern Railway (SER) has decided to speed-up 87 trains, with the time differentials ranging between 5 minutes and 77 minutes, from December 1. Talking to Business Line hereon Friday, Mr Partha Sengupta, Chief Operations Manager (COM), SER, said the speed increase in mail/express trains will also give a free pathway to SER to accommodate more trains (goods and passenger) in the existing routes and, thereby, generate more revenue.
Improvements
He said the exercise actually started in May 2006, when some 40 mail/express trains of the SER system gained in speed. Pointing out that the exercise was aimed at serving passengers better, he said since July 1, when the current timetable was introduced, some more trains have been speeded up. Mr Sengupta said improved track conditions in the SER system have actually facilitated such speed improvements. He said it has been decided that the Mumbai bound Gitanjali Express from Howrah will run at a maximum permissible speed of 110 kmph on the Howrah-Jharsuguda section with effect from October 15. The important trains, which will be made to run faster from December 1, include the Howrah-Mumbai-Howrah Mail, Howrah-Chennai and Howrah-Coromandel, Howrah-Yeshwantpur, Howrah-Pune Azad Hind Exp and the Howrah-LTT Jananeswari Express.
