New Schemes will be introduced for replanting rubber, pepper and cardamom said Mr Jayaram Ramesh, Union Minister of State for Commerce. During the next five years rubber would be replanted in 50,000 hectares and pepper and cardamom in 60,000 and 40,000 hectares respectively. For fishing and coir sectors central assistance would be continued. The Minister was addressing a farmers' meet organised by the District Congress Committee at Kottayam. The Rubber Research Institute of India under the Rubber Board would be given the status of an International Research Organisation. The restrictions on rubber import will not be withdrawn, he confirmed.
