Hyderabad , Oct. 13 Mr Sharad Joshi, Rajya Sabha MP and leader of Shetkari Sanghatan, has called upon the sugarcane farmers in Andhra Pradesh not to settle for anything less than Rs 190 per percentage point of sugar recovery from factories. "Demand for Rs 150 for every percentage point as advance and the balance later. If they do not agree for that, you are welcome to Maharashtra," he said. Addressing a State-level convention of sugarcane farmers, he said the farmers could even consider giving the produce to jaggery units, if the factories did not pay.
The Government, which put a brave face initially, was forced to give into their demands.
Mr Kotaiah of AP Rythu Collie Sangh, said the managements of sugar factories were accruing all the benefits from the sales of a host of by-products. "The farmers are not getting their due," he said.
Speakers also pointed out that the cost of production for the farmers in the less irrigated farmers was huge when compared to the water-rich areas. Yet, the MSP was same for both.
The meeting passed a resolution demanding the Government to fix not less than Rs 1,500 a tonne. It also demanded that transport costs should be borne by the factories as they did in Maharashtra and Gujarat.
The farmers also felt that the minimum support price should be calculated on the basis of cost of production.
