Chennai , Oct. 13

The Singapore Tourism Board and Chennai-based Zak Trade Fairs and Exhibitions signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) here on Friday whereby Zak would organise trade fair and exhibitions in Singapore.

Mr Syed Zakir Ahmed, Chairman and Managing Director, Zak Trade Fairs and Exhibitions, said that the company proposes to organise at least four major annual trade fairs in Singapore for the next three years continuously.

Biz collaborations

The first of these, `Salaam India', scheduled to be held in August 2007, would take several Indian companies and more than 2,000 visitors from India to Singapore to explore possible business collaborations across South East Asia.

Ms Catherine McNabb, Director, Strategic Cluster I, Business Travel and MICE Group, Singapore Tourism Board, said that this was part of Singapore's expansion plans in the tourism sector.

She said Indians are the highest spending tourists who come to Singapore, spending about S$2000 (Rs 57,600) per visit, and they also spend more time — about five days on average per tourist per visit.

Target arrivals

Singapore would be targeting 6.5 lakh Indian tourist arrivals this year as opposed to 5.8 lakh last year, she added.

Ms McNabb also inaugurated Zak Jewels 2006, a trade show organised by Zak, that saw over 36 jewellery manufacturing companies from seven cities in India participate and showcase their wares.

Mr Ahmed said that the company expects about Rs 8-10 crore of business to be generated through the exhibition.
