Kolkata , Oct. 13

Cambridge University Press India Pvt Ltd is gradually emerging as a base for publication of quality education materials for this part of the world, according to Mr Stephen Bourne, Chief Executive of Cambridge University Press.

Speaking at a news conference here on Friday, to announce the inauguration of Cambridge University Press' new office in Kolkata, Mr Bourne said the organisation's direct entry into the Indian publishing scenario - consequent upon the acquisition of 51 per cent of equity stake in the New Delhi-based Foundation Books Pvt Ltd and its divisions, Foundation Media and Foundation e-Learning - would benefit the industry as a whole.

According to him, Cambridge University Press is seized of the importance of retaining the confidence of authors and customers with India gradually emerging as the second-largest English language market in the world. The acquisition is also expected to help Indian authors access and leverage Cambridge's global reach and distribution capabilities.

According to Mr Manas Saikia, Managing Director of Cambridge University Press India Pvt Ltd, the new exclusive outlet in Kolkata would provide academics and students access to quality textbooks in different academic and educational subjects. It would provide better service to the educational sector in eastern India as well as markets in Bangladesh and Bhutan.

Mr Saikia said Foundation Books had recorded a turnover of Rs 25 crore last fiscal.
