Pune , Oct. 13 The California-based Versant Corporation, player in the specialised data management, has decided to concentrate on research and development activities in Hamburg and Pune. Talking to presspersons, Mr Jochen Witte, Chief Executive Officer, Versant, said it would be closing down the third research and development location, Fremont. He said the other activities such as sales and support would continue and that only R&D was being closed down. About four engineers formed the team in R&D in Fremont. He said the Pune operations would be ramped up from the present strength of 32 to 35. He said the company, which has its presence in the telecom, defence and security and transportation and logistics, is now looking at newer areas and had identified online gaming as the new vertical. He said it has a Japanese client, Gundan online, in this segment and that Versant has provided the technology on which it has added the applications. He noted that Gundan currently has one game and was in the process of developing other games on this platform. Mr Witte said in order to focus on its core development, it had sold off its three units, which were non-profit making. He said it had sold off its WebSphere consulting practice to Sima Solutions at a price of $5,00,000. He said the deal happened in February this year and was estimating royalty to the tune of $3,00,000 to come in by the end of October this year. The company follows the November-October fiscal. The other two units are Vanatec and Poet. Looking at the market size of the Object database technology, in which the company has its presence, he said the market size of pure ODT was about $60 million and specialised data management $250 million. He added that the growth observed in this market ranged between five and ten per cent.
