Radio/TV Marketing - Regulatory Bodies & Rulings Now, TV channels at Rs 5 a month a reality Our Bureau
Only pleasure, no pain The entire Star bouquet, consisting of 14 channels, will cost Rs 70. Set Discovery platform offering 14 channels, including Animal Planet, AXN, MTV and NDTV, will also cost Rs 70 a month.
New Delhi , Oct. 13 Eleven broadcasting firms, including big ones such as Star India, SET Discovery, ESPN and ZEE Turner, have announced Rs 5 per channel, per month, for their Conditional Access System (CAS) customers in compliance with the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) tariff order of August 31. While most of the broadcasters are unhappy with the move, they were forced to comply after TRAI issued an order in August asking them to declare a maximum retail price for their pay channels within a ceiling of Rs 5 per channel. Star India said it was adhering to the TRAI order under protest and without prejudice to the contention raised by it in the petition filed in court. SET Discovery Pvt Ltd and ESPN Software India Pvt Ltd said they reserved the right to change the fee amount depending on the court judgments. Sun TV Ltd, which offers seven channels including KTV, Sun Music and TV5, said the channels would be free-to-air in Chennai for CAS subscribers. Udaya TV and Gemini TV would also be free-to-air in Chennai. The BBC said it reserved the right under law on prices and also on the right to change the price should the ceiling change.
It's consumer's choice
From the consumers' point of view, the entire Star bouquet, consisting of 14 channels, will cost Rs 70. Set Discovery platform offering 14 channels, including Animal Planet, AXN, MTV and NDTV, will also cost Rs 70 a month. Subscribers can pick and choose from the various channels according to their interest and budget. A TRAI press release said a communication was being sent to broadcasters yet to comply with its order. In respect of broadcasters who are yet to confirm the dispatch of the reports, a communication is being sent to them by TRAI to report compliance.
