Areca growers fear `gutkha' ban

Aravindan

Kottayam , Oct. 17

Arecanut growers in the State are under the threat of rumours that the Government would impose ban on `gutkha', which has a fairly good market in the country.

Campco circles confirm that if the rumours are true, the possibility of a market crash in arecanut prices cannot be ruled out.

During the last few months, the market was almost ruling steady with minor fluctuations occasionally. Now when the news of an impending ban has spread, it would pull down the prices, the traders said. The growers sell tender arecanuts after de-husking. Shimoga quality fetches Rs 240 a kg.
