Tea Coonoor tea sales turnover up 12 pc P.S. Sundar
Coonoor , Oct. 17 Producers who sold their teas through the auctions of the Coonoor Tea Trade Association (CTTA) have earned Rs 14.74 crore more in the first nine months of this year over the corresponding period last year. The auctions saw an increase of 12.25 per cent in the turnover. This came about despite the volume sold falling because of the high prices fetched by the teas. Between January and September, a volume of 2.81 crore kg was sold through the auctions. In the corresponding period last year, 3.33 crore kg were sold. The offering was low because of a decline in production. The lower offering helped the demand to be felt sharp with the buyers and more so, exporters trying to grab as much volume as possible to sustain the business. The global shortage, particularly because of the drop in Kenyan crop, also helped the increased demand from both Pakistan and Kenya. Collectively, prices rose to Rs 48.05 a kg. In other words, every kg sold fetched, on average Rs 8 more than last year. Consequently, the overall earnings rose to Rs 135.02 crore from Rs 120.28 crore.
