Malaysia to host 2007 global pepper meet

G.K. Nair

Kochi , Oct. 17

The 35th annual session of the International Pepper Community (IPC) will be hosted by Malaysia in 2007.

Hosting of the session will be in line with the "Visit Malaysia 2007" programme, which is currently being promoted by the Malaysian Government, according to IPC.

The dates and venue for the session will be communicated to IPC member countries and spice trade associations in producing and consuming countries in due course, when confirmed by IPC in consultation with the Government of Malaysia.

Meanwhile, the Government of Hainan Province, China, has now become an associate member of IPC after its application was considered and provisionally accepted during the IPC Executive Meeting of Heads of the Delegation held in Kandy, Sri Lanka, on September 5.

Hainan Provincial Government has been asked to pursue with the Central Government to become a full member of IPC as soon as possible, an IPC report said.

Main producer

In China, pepper is mainly grown in Hainan Province, which is located at the country's south end and occupies an area of 35,000 sq. km.

Hainan is now the main pepper producing area in China, accounting for more than 95 per cent of the country's production.

The Chinese domestic market absorbs most of the pepper produced here. Annual consumption in China is estimated at around 35,000-40,000 tonnes and the per capita consumption is at relatively lower levels with 22.5 grams.

Considering the high growth rate of the Chinese economy, increasing income levels and fast developing food industry, there is significant potential for increase in per capita consumption and likelihood that the demand for pepper and pepper-based products will increase rapidly in the near future, IPC sources said.
