Rlys' first-half earnings up 16 pc

Indian Railways has generated Rs 19,537.53 crore of revenue from freight traffic (up 15.85 per cent) during the first six months of the current financial year ended September 2006 against Rs 16,863.94 crore during the corresponding period last year.

Railways carried 344.57 million tonnes (mt) of freight traffic during April- September 2006 against 313.49 mt during the corresponding period last year, an increase of 9.91 per cent. The Net Tonne Kilo Metres (NTKM), which shows the total increase in volume of goods moved and the distance, went up by 9.47 per cent, touching 2,26,501 million during April- September 2006 against 2,06,913 million during April-September 2005. An official statement also said that during September 2006, Railways recorded revenues of Rs 3,203.12 crore, up 16.95 per cent compared to Rs 2,738.77 crore in the corresponding period last year, an increase of 16.95 per cent. Railways carried 55.76 mt of freight traffic against 50.34 mt during the corresponding period last year, an increase of 10.77 per cent.
