Hyderabad , Oct. 17

The GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd (GHIAL) has announced fresh investments of Rs 523 crore for the upcoming airport project to equip it with additional facilities in order to handle 12 million passengers as against the originally planned five million when the first phase begins in March 2008.

The company took the decision to expand the scope keeping in mind a whopping 40 per cent growth in air traffic in Hyderabad. The additional investments, which include expenditure on the fuel farm, would take the total project cost to Rs 2,283.18 crore, according to Mr T. Srinagesh, Chief Operating Officer. The GHIAL board, which met here on Monday, had decided to raise additional investments by way of debts from banks.

The additional facilities to be created include increasing aircraft parking bays to 42 from the current 30, setting up of two rapid exit taxiways, and full length parallel taxiways for enabling quick turn around for aircraft. Also included in the new facilities are additional office space for airlines and extra cargo terminal space.
