Hyderabad , Oct. 19

The Air Intelligence Unit of the Income-Tax Department here seized Rs 2.8 crore in cash from a father-son duo belonging to the hotel industry after they disembarked at the Begumpet airport here on Thursday morning.

Addressing newspersons, the Director General of Income-Tax (Investigations), Mr M. Ahmed, said the passengers boarded an Indian Airlines flight IC-940 from New Delhi. Based on a tip off, the officials apprehended them on arrival at the domestic terminal.

Responding to queries, the I-T Director General said one of the two was identified as the Managing Director of a hotel group and resident of New Delhi. Following interrogation, searches were currently going on at several premises belonging to the duo in the national Capital. A decision on arresting them would be taken after further investigation, searches and explanations, he said.

The I-T official said preliminary interrogation revealed a source of huge cash, which turned out to be wrong. According to Mr Ahmed, the money was unaccounted.

"Otherwise why will such a huge amount of cash be carried by air. A person staying in a posh hotel is said to be involved. However, we are yet to nab him. Our teams have been staking out the place since morning, waiting for him to come back to hotel," the I-T Director General said.
