Growth of 13 pc in quantity terms recorded

Mangalore , Oct. 22

The global buyer-seller meet, which was organised by the Cashew Export Promotion Council of India (CEPCI) during September 15-17, has received a good response from overseas buyers. As a result, cashew exports registered a growth of 13.42 per cent in quantity terms in September alone, though the export figures for the first six months of the current fiscal declined by 1.53 per cent. Mr Walter D'Souza, Chairman, CEPCI, told Business Line that the immediate aftermath of the global buyer-seller meet was that a lot of cashew shipment took place from September 20 to end of that month.

As a result of this, exports registered a growth of 13.42 per cent in quantity terms during that month.

He said 7,228 tonnes of cashew worth Rs 152.31 crore were exported in September against 6,373 tonnes worth Rs 139.78 crore in September 2005, recording an increase of 13.42 per cent in quantity and 8.96 per cent in value terms.

A lot of business took place on the sidelines of the meet. A major portion of this is additional business, which would not have come at this point of time, he said.

"And the real effect of the meet will be seen during October and November. We are hopeful that exports will be even better in October. The trend is likely to continue in November and December," he said.

The CEPCI had organised a global buyer-seller meet at Kovalam in Kerala as part of its Golden Jubilee celebrations. It was successful in generating a business of over Rs 250 crore.
