Reddy invited to open world agri congress

The World Agriculture Forum has invited the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, to inaugurate the forthcoming World Agriculture Congress (WAC), slated to be held during May 8-10, 2007 at St Luis, US.

The Agriculture Ministers and other Government leaders from about 60 developing countries are expected to participate in the Congress, which is held every four years, according to a press release from the Chief Minister's Office (CMO).

The Chairman of the Forum and former Prime Minister of New Zealand, Mr James B. Bolger, extended the invitation to Dr Reddy. He said the efforts initiated by the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minster in agriculture were appreciable, the CMO quoted the letter as saying.

The Chief Minister is the only Government leader invited from India to inaugurate and deliver the address. Dr Reddy discussed the issue and preparation steps for the meeting with the Agriculture Minister and officials of the Ministry today.

STATE GOVT LAUDED

In response to the invitation from Mr Bolger, Dr Reddy said the State was committed to enhance budgetary allocation for agriculture and allied sectors and also to support farmer's welfare, the release said.

The Chief Minister, who is leaving for New Delhi on November 3, will discuss various issues concerning agriculture with the Union Government and Agriculture Ministry. The State recently got a relief package of Rs 9,650 crore from the Centre for 16 districts in the State.

Currently , the credit flow for farmers for crop and term loans was of the order of Rs 20,000 crore (fiscal 2006-07), which is up from Rs 16,000 crore in the last fiscal, the release added.
