Cotton development programme adopts 2,900 farmers

Coimbatore , Oct. 22

The Confederation of Indian Textile Industry's cotton development and research association (CITI-CDRA) has taken up integrated cotton development programme (contract farming) and front line demonstration (FLD) this year for the transfer of cotton production technologies to the farmers in the Vidharba region of Maharashtra.

While over 14,000 acres involving over 2,900 farmers in Wardha and Buldhana districts have been adopted under the contract cotton farming, the FLD programme has been extended to four villages of Kolwad, Tandulwadi, Sakhli and Dhodap in Buldhana district.

In two of the four villages covered under the project, the CITI-CDRA had succeeded in encouraging the cotton farmers to adopt the concept of growing `one-variety-in-one-village', according to a press note from Mr P.D. Patodia, Chairman, standing committee on cotton, CITI-CDRA.

Implementation

The CITI-CDRA has brought in Bayer Crop Science and RSR Mohota Spinning and Weaving Mills Ltd, Hinganghat into the implementation of contract farming in Vidharbha. RSR Mohota Spinning has agreed to purchase kapas from farmers engaged under the contract farming project in Wardha district and the farmers selling kapas would be offered incentive over the ruling market rate for the cotton purchased by the textile mill.

According to the press note, Veerchand Nursey Ginning and Pressing Factory, Malkapur and Bhaidas Cursonda and Company from Mumbai have evinced interest in procuring the cotton kapas from the farmers listed under the contract farming project.
