Yobikes set to vroom across South soon

Virendra Pandit

For the cost of a litre of petrol, nearly Rs 55, they can run the vehicle for 700 km and get its battery charged anywhere like their mobile phone.

Ahmedabad , Oct. 22

Teenagers and housewives in the four southern States would no longer have to worry about shelling out a fortune on expensive two-wheelers or the rising fuel costs involved.

They can now look forward to own a no-petrol, no-licence, no-registration and pollution-free battery-operated two-wheeler costing between Rs 16,000 and Rs 29,000 apiece that they can drive at a 25-km-an-hour speed.

What is more: for the cost of a litre of petrol, nearly Rs 55, they can run the vehicle for 700 km and get its battery charged anywhere like their mobile phone.

And, of course return to their house without waking up anybody, as the two-wheeler is also noise-free!

For, a Gujarat-based company that launched battery-based bikes in the State in February this year, is all set to launch its five models across south India in December.

Dealers' network

Indus Elec-Trans, auto-division of the Rs 360-crore Electrotherm (India) Ltd Group, has set up a network of dealers for the purpose.

So far, the company has established a chain of 105 dealers in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

Mr Avinash Bhandari, Director of the company, told Business Line that the Yobikes range, aimed mainly at youth, housewives and office-goers, whose travel needs are limited, would also be launched in the eastern States in a few months.

The company aims to sell 55,000 vehicles by March 2007 and double that number in the fiscal 2006-07.

For this purpose, the company is expanding its current capacity of making one-lakh two-wheelers annually.
