Opinion - Letters
Fiscal prudence

This is with reference to "Austerity overdrive" (Business Line, October 26): It reinforces the fact that fiscal prudence can be ensured only through the combined effort of all the Ministries.

The overshooting of Plan and non-Plan expenditure should be monitored and checked.

Cutting down on the number of travels abroad is one way to curtail expenditure. Here the purpose of the visit should be given priority.

The number of foreign trips by public servants, including Ministers, should be limited to a fixed number per tenure.

If the Finance Ministry is to keep fiscal deficit at less than four per cent of GDP, austerity is the key.
