Education Government - Policy States - Kerala Khadi uniforms to be made compulsory in Kerala schools Our Bureau
`This is the first time in the country that such a scheme is being implemented in schools.'
Thiruvananthapuram , Oct. 27 The Kerala Government has decided to make khadi uniforms compulsory once a week in all schools in the State. The programme is being implemented jointly by the Industries and Education departments. The decision was taken at a meeting attended by the Industries Minister, Mr Elamaram Kareem, and the Education Minister, Mr M.A. Baby, here. It is estimated that there are around 50 lakh students at the school level in the State. Since the handloom societies and khadi units will not able to provide the required cloth for all the students at one go, it has been decided to make available one pair of uniforms each to 13.5 lakh students next year. Out of this, Hantex will provide uniforms to 10 lakh students, while Hanveev will supply another 2.5 lakh uniforms. The Khadi and Village Industries Board will make available the balance one lakh uniforms. The Government will also instruct the teachers and other employees in the schools to wear khadi dress once a week. The officials concerned will visit the schools in January to collect orders for the uniforms. A common pricing system will be applied to Hantex, Hanveev and khadi board products.
New market
The Industries Minister said this was the first time in the country that such a scheme was being implemented in schools. Through this, a new marketing avenue was opening for handloom and khadi products, he said. As part of it, production of these items would have to be enhanced, which would mean creation of more employment opportunities, he added. The Director of Handlooms, Mr N. Vimalan, said the scheme would help bring back to life around 15,000 looms in the State that had been lying idle for long.
