Telecommunications Industry & Economy - Industry Associations Plans afoot to develop telecom gear manufacturing Our Bureau
New Delhi , Oct. 27 The Telecom Equipment Manufacturers Association (TEMA) has said that it has developed plans to facilitate local telecom equipment manufacturing worth $100 billion over the next few years. "The move is aimed at meeting local and export requirements and to place India on the global telecom manufacturing map and provide state-of-art carrier class technology to the operators and service provider. TEMA will expand its role to cover the entire gamut of telecom sector include equipment, integration, value-added services, content and application providers," said a press release. TEMA said that it would work with Bharti, Reliance, Tata, Hutch and Idea to promote equipment manufactured locally. "Focus groups on technology, manufacturing, and business promotion and strategy, policy and regulations are being formed to address the concerns of all segments of the industry. TEMA is also promoting standards and quality both for the equipment and spectrum with ITU and other regional bodies," said Mr N.K. Goyal, Chairman-Emeritus TEMA. A large number of gear manufacturers such as Nokia, Ericsson, Alcatel have set up manufacturing base in the country. Currently, At present only state-owned BSNL has a policy to buy equipment from companies having a local manufacturing unit. TEMA said that it will promote manufacture of telecom equipment in SEZs and is currently working with the Ministry of Communications and IT to set up an telecom export promotion council.
