Medical Institutions & Hospitals Clinical research bodies to get $1-m funding Our Bureau,
New Delhi , Oct. 27 A million dollars have been committed to upscale the capacities and competence of the country's clinical research organisations. The announcement was made by Dr M.K. Bhan, Secretary of Department of Biotechnology (DBT), at a workshop organised by FICCI, which discussed the need for a world-class regulatory environment in India in the area of pharmaceutical and biotech product development, and clinical research. The funds, to be put together by DBT and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) would be available from January 1, 2007, said Dr Bhan.
Challenges
On the issue of a central regulator for the pharmaceutical sector, the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI), Mr M. Venkateswarlu, pointed out the challenges the proposed authority would face, considering how fast clinical research organisations were mushrooming. He also advised US companies to partner with Indian firms and not just look at India as an outsourcing opportunity. "It's a good proposition for international companies to conduct clinical trials in India because it's cost effective, but it's not a good proposition if they are coming to India because there is less of a scientific rigour here," said Mr Suresh Kankanwadi, Senior Director of Dr Reddy's. The workshop was also attended by representatives of the Government, the US Department of Health and Human Services and the pharmaceutical industry. Apart from regulatory authorities, transparency on behalf of the industry, clarity on Government policy and ethical issues in clinical trials were also discussed.
