IT industry slams CITU move to form association

The Centre of Indian Trade Unions' (CITU) move to form an association for employees in the IT and ITeS sector has been termed as a "retrograde step" by the industry.

CEOs of IT and ITeS companies here will meet in the first week of November to deliberate upon the possible adverse impact of such a move on the IT and ITeS companies in the State.

Informed industry sources said that the move is ill-timed, since the IT and ITeS companies have just begun to consider the State for investments. They said that the CITU move could prove to be a setback for the State's desire to be among the top-four IT destinations in the country by 2010.

Most people, on condition of anonymity, said that the timing of the CITU move was unfortunate since West Bengal had, after years of efforts, begun to find a place in the national IT arena. In the current scenario, several IT and ITeS companies have slammed the brakes on their expansion plans in West Bengal. Says the chief executive of a fairly large ITeS company, "Now I have to think twice before expanding my set-up here. I would rather go to another State that is more friendly to companies like ours."

His sentiments were echoed by the head of another mid-sized BPO outfit who is "pretty upset and unhappy" with the development. "Look at the salaries people engaged in the IT and ITeS sector get. Unlike factory workers, their working conditions are not harsh. Then why are the trade unions trying to destabilise an industry that has recorded the fastest rate of growth by any industry segment in the State in the last few years?" According to him, not only has the IT and ITeS sector created the maximum number of jobs in recent years, people engaged in the sector have also provided a boost to the real estate sector here as well.

A section of the industry, however, is confident that the trade union's move will hardly impact the industry adversely. "Attempts to form trade unions among white-collar workers in the private sector has hardly been successful. I see no reason why it should be a success in this case," said a top executive of an IT firm. Mr Shoummo Acharya, President of TiE, Kolkata Chapter, said the move will "not have any negative impact on the industry and the State will move forward."
